Austin Xeriscape was founded on a straightforward idea: Central Texas deserves landscaping that's actually designed for Central Texas. Not a desert look borrowed from Phoenix, not a lawn borrowed from Ohio, but something built specifically around the Hill Country's limestone soil, native plant communities, and unpredictable rainfall patterns. We're a team of designers and horticulturists who believe that low maintenance landscape design and genuine beauty aren't in competition with each other, and every project we take on is proof of that.

Why We Do This

We started this company after watching too many Austin yards go through the same cycle: install a traditional lawn, water it aggressively to keep it alive through the summer, watch it brown out anyway during drought restrictions, then repeat the following year. It's expensive, it's wasteful, and it's completely unnecessary in a region with this much horticultural potential. Central Texas is home to an extraordinary range of native plants, from Gulf Coast muhly and blackfoot daisy to Texas sage, yucca, and native bunch grasses, that have adapted over centuries to exactly the conditions that make traditional lawns struggle here. Our job is connecting homeowners and businesses to that existing potential rather than fighting it.

What Makes Our Approach Different

A lot of what gets called xeriscaping is really just rock and cactus with no design behind it. We take a different approach. Every project starts with a real conversation about how you use your outdoor space, what your property's sun exposure and drainage look like, and what aesthetic direction speaks to you, whether that's a modern xeriscape garden with sculptural plantings and clean gravel lines, a softer Hill Country native landscape design full of texture and seasonal color, or something in between. From there we build a custom plan using proven Central Texas native and adapted plants, proper soil amendment for our region's alkaline, rocky soil, and mulching and irrigation strategies that reduce water use without sacrificing how the landscape looks or functions.

We also design with Austin's rainfall patterns specifically in mind. Because Central Texas gets intense, infrequent rain rather than steady moisture, stormwater management is part of nearly every project we design, whether that's a dedicated rain garden or simple grading and berm work that keeps water on your property instead of running off into the street.
